Dear Marta,

You are correct. As of September 23, 2010, any new health plans/policies cannot deny coverage or exclude certain benefits from coverage to children under age 19 based on pre-existing conditions. This critical protection will apply to everyone starting in 2014, when additional changes to the health insurance market are in place. In the interim, individuals may be eligible for coverage through “Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans” available in each state. To find out more, check out this link: http://www.healthcare.gov/law/provisions/preexisting/index.html

It is my understanding & experience that for several more years patients can still be denied new coverage based on pre-existing conditions. At present, I believe this now only applies to children. Please can someone confirm this? Many thanks!
