I wrote the THEME for this year’s Older American’s month – “Age Stong, Live Long” and the premise is that families help their loved one stay in a strong supportive environment as long as they can. You have the idea – Campaign for Better Care is a wonderful idea.

My mother died two years ago. She had been healthy and active and then she was weak and sick. It was that fast. It was so difficult. I was living in Florida and Mom was sick in Kansas. I went to Kansas and was there for months. We had two brothers and a sister with jobs, so the two retired siblings became the major care givers. All my mother wanted was to be in her home…………..to die in her own bed. We were determined to see to it that she got that wish, but it wasn’t easy. Some days we would spend hours on phone calls and paperwork. There were no guidelines to show us the way. I don’t think it should been so hard. It would be fantastic to see health care reform provide coordinated care management for the needs of the elderly and their care givers. The need is growing at a rate that must be addressed.

I am grateful for the health care Bill that was passed. I believe, however, that we need a public option. Hopefully that can be an improvement added later.

Excellent points, Lynn. Helping consumers and caregivers navigate the health care system and coordinate services, medications, etc. is critical, especially for older adults with multiple chronic conditions. The Partnership’s CBC is especially needed now to ensure that consumers play a key role in the health care reform implementation process. Good luck.
